Mirror Work: A Self-Love Ritual

What is mirror work? Literally, the act of looking at yourself in the mirror. Because the mirror exposes vulnerable and neglected parts of your inner self, it makes you immediately aware of where you are resisting and where you are flowing.

There are many benefits of mirror work:

— Increase self-compassion and self-awareness

— Improve stress-management

— Strengthen emotional resilience

— Improve relationships to self and others

— Increase mindfulness and connection to your body

You only need 2 things to complete this ritual: yourself and a mirror. Although, other special items are always encouraged as they add to the power of intention.

5 steps to creating your own mirror work ritual:

  1. Mark the start of your intentional mirror ritual with something special — a few deep breaths, applying essential oils, lighting Palo Santo, incense, or a candle, etc.

  2. Gaze at your face in the mirror for at least 2 minutes.

  3. Stay nonjudgmental, just observe — view your face as that of a dear friend. Talk to yourself as you would a dear friend. Or talk to the younger wounded version of yourself.

  4. Spend time looking into your own eyes. Tell yourself “I love you” or use other positive affirmations. Shower yourself with compliments! Pay attention to what feels uncomfortable and lean into it

  5. Close the ritual the same special way you started it. keep journal about your experience if you want.

As you develop your practice aim for longer periods of time and expand your view to your whole body.

Facing yourself in the mirror can be difficult at first, thats why it’s called work. But mirror work gets easier, more relaxing, and fun! Eventually it will turn into mirror play, and you will know and love yourself with ease.
